Antique Hardwood Flooring from Reclaimed Lumber

Antique Wood Flooring is typically made from material sourced from old barns, or factory buildings or other old structures built 100 or more years ago. In that time, large wooden beams were the main structural support for large buildings (along with stone). Modern buildings are supported with steel in the same way. These days steel is stronger and cheaper alternative to large wooden beams for a lot of obvious reasons.

Wood salvaged from these older buildings is referred to as reclaimed wood or lumber, recycled wood, barn wood, antique wood, and reclaimed timber. Reclaimed Hardwood Flooring is the product of milling or sawing down the large wooden beams out of the old buildings. Antique wood flooring is generally sold in the tongue and groove, or plank style. Most often, the wider the boards, the more desirable the flooring is to buyers. Also, many types of reclaimed hardwood show the patina and character of aged wood including worm holes, knots, and checking (small cracks).

The term tongue and groove comes from the fact that the flooring is milled to have a “tongue” edge that fits into the “groove” edge of the piece next to it when installed. The joint allows for the natural contraction and expansion of the wood with humidity and temperature. Plank style antique wood flooring is cut with the grain of the wood and can be in lengths from a few feet to 12 feet or more. Wood “moves” with changes to environment by becoming narrower, not shorter in length, so the tongue and groove joint is designed to allow for this contraction. The potential width and length of a board is obviously only limited from the source where is comes from.

Adirondack, Lumber Capital of the World

Adirondack, Lumber Capital of the World

$28.94

In 1850 New York State produced more lumber than any state in the nationaa half million trees a year or a billion board feet of lumber. Enough lumber was produced in this area each year to make a boardwalk three-feet wide around the Earth. Most of the logs came out of the Adirondack area and were processed in Glens Falls, Warren County, New York. This area was known as the Lumber Capital of the World. The Adirondack area produced many lumber barons. Many used their wealth to build churches, canals, turnpikes, railways, great dams, hydroelectric plants, and enormous lumber mills. The history of the Quaker pioneers who settled in this northern wilderness near the great falls on the Hudson River is depicted in this book. These pioneers built the first water-driven sawmills and gristmills. Adirondack, Lumber Capital of the World depicts the areaas lumber camps, log drives, saw mills, pulp mills, tanneries, and the building of the Erie and Champlain Canals.

House-Dreams: How One Man’s Vision Became a Family Home

$5.61

The story of an amateur builder and two novice apprentices and how they turned an overgrown blackberry patch, ten truckloads of lumber, a keg of cut nails and an antique staircase into a real home. House-Dream is probably the most warmhearted and engaging book about house building that I”ve come across. Hugh Howard has done a terrific job of charting the builder’’s journey while personalizing it for everyone. (Bob Vila) Major decisions often get made for small reasons. The day we resolved to build a house for ourselves demonstrates how the little can beget the big. The impetus for one of the most momentous decisions of our lives proved to be a tiny wildflower.
