@M Chemical weapons were used in WW1. The Germans, French and British used poison gas during that war. The Germans used Mustard Gas shells, just like those found in Iraq.
There were no WMD before the Atomic Bomb. There were chemical and biological weapons ever since man began to understand and exploit his surroundings. The use of these in warfare date from before the beginnings of civilization. When one tribe attacked another by poisoning their wells. Things became far more developed with the beginnings of Cities, because it was more effective to use such weapons against a confined area, because their sources of food and water were easier to predict, control or poison. These weapons were a lot different to those of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. You must remember that people of these times did not commonly links disease with what today we know to be the causes. We know how many things can cause diseases but ancient people did not. They thought that disease was caused by the Gods.
In classical times the Greeks and Romans both used bio-chem weapons against one another. They were also used by most of the other peoples of the time when the opportunity arose. Typical was the throwing clay pots containing scorpions and snakes at enemy ships of over the walls of towns. Deadly to a few, but hardly the mass destruction that could be caused by manufacturing the venoms and spaying it over the enemy from rockets or planes. Poisoning a river with hellebore at the city of Kirrha by rival Greek forces is typical. The Romans lost a huge battle because the defending army poisoned them with toxic honey. The use of throwing the heads of the dead into a town in these times was to demoralise the enemy and cause them to give in. Not as a bio weapon.
The early chemical weapons were things like the Greeks used against the Romans around 160BC. The Greek defenders burnt sacks full of feathers and pumped the smoke into the tunnels that the Romans were using to try and undermine the city walls. Fire weapons made from olive oil / palm oil mixed with tar / pine resin made very effective weapons as the oil could be squirted and would float on water, the tar and pine resins once set alight are very hard to put out and become very sticky so they cannot be washed off of ships or buildings. The Greeks had a weapon that worked like a giant syringe that could fire flame from the bow of a ship.
